About Us

John Joyce

MVB CertAVP(GSAS) MRCVS
RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery

John qualified from University College Dublin in 2012, starting out his career in Northern Ireland, in Drumahoe and Enniskillen for 4 years.

In 2016 he moved to London, working with the charity Celia Hammond Animal Trust. With a high volume of surgical cases, this was ideal place for him to undertake the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Surgery which he completed with distinction by synoptic exam in 2019.

Moving to Dublin, he joined Anicare Veterinary Group as their Orthopaedic Surgeon where he saw both first opinion and referral cases, later becoming Clinical Director there.

In launching Northwest OrthoVet in 2024, John looks forward to working with practices to provide expert surgical care to the pets of the Northwest.

John is an RCVS Advanced Practitioner in Small Animal Surgery as well as a current member of AO Vet and the British Veterinary Orthopaedic Association.

Referral Orthopaedic Surgery
In your practice

At Northwest Orthovet we provide a dedicated in-house surgical referral service for your practice.

We offer a large range of orthopaedic and soft tissue procedures. We operate predominantly in the northwest of Ireland, on both sides of the border, but can also travel further afield.

We believe that excellent surgical outcomes and client satisfaction derive from clear communication, high standards of care and attention to detail.

How we can benefit your practice

Our surgical referral service allows your patients to remain close to home, being treated in a familiar environment, by friendly faces they already know.

Having a surgeon who is experienced in providing advanced surgical procedures in an empathetic yet efficient manner can be a valuable extension of the services your practice currently offers.

We aim to provide affordable, high quality care that strengthens the bond between your practice and patients.

Referral is easy and we provide a high level of support to both you and your patient, before and after surgery.

How it works

Referring a case is simple

01

Contact us

You can use our referral form here to easily send us patient history, x-ray images and indicate your preferred day for surgery Alternatively drop us an email or contact us via Whatsapp to discuss the case. We offer a free advice and x-ray reading service to our practices.

03

Surgery

The surgery will be performed in the host practice but we will provide all the necessary equipment, implants and consumables. All we require from you is medications, an RVN to monitor anaesthesia and recovery of the patient. We will phone the owner following the surgery and send out a surgery report within 24 hours.

Further details about the day of surgery are available here.

02

Consultation

We believe excellent communication is the key to success. Once a procedure is booked, we will arrange a consultation with the pet owner. For morning surgeries, this may be on admission to hospital but for afternoon procedures we will organise a Zoom or phone consultation to discuss the surgery with the client.

04

Follow Up

Our job doesn't end until the patient is fully recovered. We work with the host practice to ensure thorough follow-up and care after the surgery. We will contact the pet owner within 1 week of the procedure and again after 4 weeks. Usually post-operative x-rays will be taken after 6-8 weeks and we are happy to interpret these and give guidance on a return to exercise.
